Both a patent and a utility model are security documents by which the State gives their owner the exclusive right of his owner to use the invention for a certain period, in exchange for the detailed publication of the invention to the public. Both the patent and the utility model are types of industrial property, and their granting in Slovakia is governed by Act No. 435/2001 Coll. on patents, supplementary protection certificates. A patent is a stronger type of protection for an invention than a utility model, but registering a utility model is easier and cheaper.
